Mercedes - Mercedes G-Wagen

The G-Klasse Mercedes project came about at the direct request of the Shah of Iran in the early 1970's, who was a huge shareholder in Daimler-Benz. The Shahs stipulation was for a vehicle design for something better suited than the dated American Jeeps that the Iranian army was using. This resulted in Daimler-Benz forming a joint venture company with the Austrian Steyr-Daimler-Puch to form Geländefahrzeug Gesellschaft to oversee the project, Daimler-Benz (Mercedes) in charge of engine and transmission, with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in charge of overall design and development followed by production assembly in Graz. The head of design was Erich Ledwinka, secomnd generation vehicle designer, who had been responsible for the incredible Puch Haflinger among other projects. The internal code for the new vehicle was "H2" which was short for Haflinger 2. After seven years from it's inception, production finally starting in Austria in 1979. Due to the partnership this vehicle was sold in certain countries (mostly Eastern Europe, Austria and Switzerland) as the Puch G (until 1999) and Mercedes everywhere else. The letter G in G-Klasse stands for Geländewagen, meaning "off road vehicle". And although the prototype was delivered to the Shah, the Revolution that took place put a halt to the 20,000 vehicles that the Shah had ordered after the prototype was completed in 1975. Later on there were various Mercedes G Wagen models (W 460 models built from 1979 to 1992) available with both petrol engines called Mercedes 230G , 230GE , 280GE  and also with the Diesel engine models listed Mercedes 240GD and Mercedes 300GD . Note that the term "G-Wagen" is a term that is used only in the UK and USA, whereas elsewhere this Mercedes is known as the G-Klass or Geländewagen.

All Mercedes G-Klasse models, namely the 230G, 230GE, 280GE, 240GD and 300GD were fitted with the 205R16 tyre size.
