Why does Blockley Tyre Co. manufacture inner tubes, when tubes are available from a variety of sources, including well known brands such as Michelin and Continental?
Being involved with tyre design and manufacture it soon became abundantly clear that there was a real problem sourcing good inner tubes for the Veteran, Vintage and Classic tyres we were making. What was on offer was invariably either dimensionally incorrect (where one tube covered far too many sizes as was never the case in period) or the quality was lacking either in material type, thickness or the way it was produced such as thickness at the joint (which causes bands of wear each side). And this is why people have the unnecessary problems they experience, not realising it is the tube at fault. Early on I realised the sad fact that Blockley would also need to invest in tooling to produce a sizeable range of no compromise "Blockley Superior" range of tubes, made on our own tooling to absolute correct specifications, and using the best material and quality control. At present we supply some 40 individual tubes, but this is an ongoing process. But notice how every one of the Classic tyre wholesaler outlets we do not deal with also supplies a range of tubes covering the same range that Blockley makes, but with a far fewer number of tubes! They can do this with codes, or not listing the multisizing on the tubes where they are listed, to give the impression they are correctly sized -- a way of cutting down on costs, and therefore quality. Now you can comprehend a little of how these big companies are interested in profit over the well being of the end user.
