Lagonda - Lagonda V12
The all new V12 Lagonda, with 4.5 litre engine capacity was available from 1937, and was the work of WO Bentley. The chassis of the V12 Lagonda was also new (in 10ft 4", or longer 11 feet 6 inches) with independent front suspension. Rolls Royce had previously taken Lagonda to court and successfully sued them for advertising that their earlier Lagonda model had been designed by WO Bentley! I wonder if the Lagonda decision to build a V12 had anything to do with this, bearing in mind Rolls Royce had made their V12 in 1935 for the Phantom 3. The Lagonda V12 was a car that could reach 100mph even in saloon form. The V12 came in 2 chassis lengths, the shorter was 10ft 4" used for the Rapide Drophead Coupe, with bodywork design by Frank Feeley, with the longer wheelbase chassis being supplied to the coachbuilders of the customers choice. Unfortunately the V12 model was not out for very long before the war started. The Rapide name was reused by the companys new owner some 25 years later.
