Morgan - Morgan 4/4

The name 4/4 first appeared on a Morgan in 1937, that was the first of the Morgan cars to have 4 wheels rather than 3. Post war the same car was initially produced, but with the 1100cc Climax engine replaced with a special overhead valve 1267cc Standard, coupled to a Moss gearbox, and these prewar continuation 4/4's (Series 1) were produced up to 1950 when Morgan then built the Plus 4.

The next specification of the Morgan 4/4, the Series 2, started in 1955. A new designed car based on the Plus 4, its chassis had a conventional axle at the front and semi elliptic springs at the back. Using the Ford 100E side valve 1,172cc engine and Ford gearbox, the 4/4 engine specification altered in parallel with the engines that were used in the Ford cars. So for example the Morgan Series 3 was Ford Anglia powered, the Series 4 fitted with the 109E Classic. The Series 5 built in 1966 had the first of the Cortina series engines with 1,498cc and then the last 4/4, the 1967 Morgan 4/4 Series 5 started off with the Cortina engine but then in 1968 it was switched to the Morgan 4/4 1600 with the Ford Kent 1600 engine, in various states of tune options. This was replaced by the Ford CVH 1600 engine in early 1982. During this change over between the two Ford engines there were even a few Morgan 4/4 1600's built with the 1600 Fiat Twin cam power unit. For 1992 the Ford CVH engine was fuel injected, which was the CVH EFI. The next change for the Morgan 4/4 was in 1993 when the engine of the 4/4 became 1800cc fitted with the Ford Zetec. From 2006 the Ford 1800 125bhp Duratec was used. Starting in 2009 the "4/4 1600" name was again revived, using the 110bhp Ford Sigma 1595cc engine, coupled to a five speed gearbox.

The Morgan 4/4 then had a Fiat twin cam 1600 option from 1982 to 1985

Morgan 4/4 tyre sizes: The Second Series of 4/4's from 1955 Morgan fitted 5.00x16 tyres, followed by marginally larger 5.20x16 tyres for the Series 3 from 1961. Morgan then fitted 15" wheels with the 4/4 Series 4 which were fitted with 5.60x15 cross ply tyres, which are equivalent to the radial 155R15 tyre size. And in any case as Morgan started fitting radial ply tyres, this same 155R15 size as standard to 1968, after which Morgan replaced this tyre size with the slightly larger 165R15 size. Later the Morgan 4/4 1600 came out of the factory with the 165R15 size in 1967 and stayed with this tyre size ever since. Blockley produces both these Morgan 4/4 tyre sizes with superb period correct tread, steel belt construction high speed rated tyres which will transform the handling, guaranteed - see full details below.
