Renault - Renault 4

The Renault 4 (sometimes shortened to just R4) was the first front wheel drive Renault to be produced, built between 1961 and 1992. Also known as the Renault 4L ("Quatrelle"), it was the Renault answer to the Citroen 2CV, which provided inexpensive utility motoring to the masses. It had a practical hatchback, and the torsion bar suspension allowed there to be more room inside the car, compared to it's rival. A smaller engine capacity version, called the Renault 3 (3HP) had an engine of 603cc putting it in a lower road tax bracket than the Renault 4's 747cc tax rated at 4HP. The Renault 4 continued in production for a couple of more years to 1994, in Slovenia.
