Daimler - Daimler Vanden Plas
The Daimler Vanden Plas name was first used on the top of the range six cylinder Daimler Sovereign Series 3 cars. Also in some parts of the world where there were problems using the Daimler name due to Trademark issues, these Daimlers would be sold using the Vanden Plas brand. The Vanden Plas name was well know from the 1920's when this coachbuilding company moved to Cricklewood in North London, but it was post war that Vanden Plas were taken over by Austin which eventually became part of BMC, which eventually Jaguar became part of in 1968. The Vanden Plas factory was closed in 1979, but the Vanden Plas name carried on.
With the introduction of the Daimler Double six in 1972, the best equipped version was marketed as the Double Six Vanden Plas. The Vanden Plas version also had a 4 inch longer wheelbase making it much more comfortable for the rear passengers, and was easily recognised externally as the Daimler Vanden Plas was fitted with a vinyl roof.
