Ford - Ford Escort
The Ford Escort was available from 1968, made by the newly merged Ford of Europe, with this new Escort model taking over from the now ageing Cortina range. The Escort was built at Fords Hailwood plant, and shortly after production started there, the Escort was also made at Fords factory in Belgium. By 1970 the Escort was also being manufactured in Germany. Ford Escort production carried on through to 1975.
Tyre sizes for the Ford Escort :
- Ford Escort Mk1 and Mk2 cars were originally fitted with 13" wheels (Escort TC, Escort Mexico, Escort 1800RS, Escort RS2000, Escort Sport) and all left the factory on 165R13 tyre size fitted to a 4 1/2 J wheel, and we would recommend our high speed rated Blockley 165HR13 tyre - a tyre which has the period correct tread pattern with outstanding handling. For those wanting a wider tyre which has the same same diameter there is the Blockley 185/70VR13 size, a size which many owners fit.
- Some of the smaller capacity Cortina 1100 and 1300cc base models plus the Estate version were fitted with the smaller 155R13 size.
- A few years later the alternative tyre size option for the Escort was the 175/70SR13, basically a wider version of the 155R13, fitted to a 5J 13 wheel, while from 1975 and onward this new size 175/70R13 tyre became the standard fitment for the all the Ford Escort models. - Ford Escort Mk2 RS1800 and RS2000 original tyre size was still the 175/70HR13 and Blockley produces a period correct high quality 175/70VR13, made with an even higher 149mph /240kph speed rate - details below:
- For a 13" rim, remember apart from the wider 185/70VR13 tyre, Blockley also makes a 235/60VR13 tyre suitable for a 5.5" rim (and also suitable for up to 9" rims) should anyone be contemplating anything special! Blockley is the only tyre producer making this period correct tyre size, which was available in period.
- For the bulk of the Escort Mk3 models the 175/70R13 is the suitable tyre size. Blockley produces an outstanding 175/70VR13 tyre - details below:
- For the Escort Mk4 (built 1979 to 1982) the tyre size listed for just about all models was 145R13 for the 1100 2 door, 4 door and Estate, and 155R13 for the 1100L versions. The Mk4 Escort 1300 similarly had the 155R13 size, as did all the models of the Mk4 Escort 1600L, 1600GL and 1600 Ghia.
For the later Mk6 Escorts, post 1983, the same tyre sizes were in use, namely 155R13 and 175/70R13.
