Morris - Morris Oxford
The Morris Oxford made after the 1939-45 war were produced at the same time as the companys Minor, in 1948. The Oxford was in effect the "big Minor", having a larger 1476cc engine, with 4 doors built on a wheelbase that was 11 inches longer, that was also designed by Alec issigonis. These post war Morris Oxfords had monocoque chassis, which also helped in saving on steel which was in short supply. There was also an Oxford Estate version. The Oxford Series 2 came in 1954, now with the improved overhead valve BMC B series 1489cc engine. The bodywork was very different and no longer showed any lineage to the Minor. The Morris Oxford Series 3 thast came in 1956 had mild bodywork differences while the Oxford Series 4 was a 4 door with traveller style bodywork. With the Morris Oxford Series 5 came the Pininfarina body design that was used on a lengthened wheelbase (as with the rest of the BMC range) which now used smaller 14 inch wheels. For late 1961 the Morris Oxford Series 6 had the wheelbase extended another inch, along with the use of the larger bore 1622cc BMC B series engine, and shared alot with the Westminster . . . . Morris Oxford production ran until 1971.
Tyre size for all the Morris Oxford models :
- The earlier Morris Oxford models (1948 through 1960) which are the Morris Oxford MO Series 1, Series 2, Series 3 and Series 4 all had 15 inch wheels and fitted with tyre size 5.50x15 or 5.60x15 specified originally, which is the radial equivalent 155R15 size. Blockley produce this 155HR15 tyre size, as well as a white wall version. For the later series we would actually suggest the larger 165R15 size, because in any case the Morris Oxfords built for export had this slightly larger 5.90x15 tyre fitted, that is equivalent to the 165R15 size. Note that the Traveller version Morris Oxford Traveller came from new with this 165R15 size. So on balance we would suggest the slightly larger 165VR15 Blockley tyre with it's larger diameter, although this costs a little more.
- Morris Oxford models (1959 through 1969) Series 5, Series 6 and Series 7 now had the smaller 14" wheels fitted with tyre size 5.90x14, which is radial 165R14 tyre equivalent size. The Morris Oxford Traveller versions from this period also had this same 165R14 tyre size. Blockley produces a high quality, steel belted radial 165HR14 tyre with period correct tread which offers remarkable handling - see full details of these Morris Oxford tyre sizes below:
